Mike Smith Scholarship

Legacy for a Coach and Scholar

The family, friends, and former students of Mike Smith are making this scholarship available to any qualified Kokomo High School graduating senior.  Mr. Smith was a graduate of Kokomo High School in 1965 and began his teaching career at KHS four years after graduation from Indiana State University where he played football.  As a teacher, Mike was a pioneer for Kokomo High School by developing and teaching the first AP class offered by the school.  His specialty was World and European History.  In addition to teaching social studies for 40 years, Mike coached a number of sports, including football and wrestling.  However, his first love in coaching was baseball.  As head coach for the KATS, Mike led his team to the 1985 IHSAA State Championship. He followed with state runner-up status in 1988.   He was inducted into the Howard County Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.  Mr. Smith leaves a legacy for Kokomo High School with his devotion to both academics and athletics.
